“Anatomy of a Fall” is a ground breaking documentary about the investigation into the crash of the Polish Air Force One in Smolensk by one of the best Polish investigative reporters, Anita Gargas. The documentary examines first two years of the Smolensk crash investigation from the perspective of various interested parties, including families of the victims, independent scientists, journalists, and Polish government officials.
“Anatomy of a Fall” superbly documents the distinction between those stakeholders who seek the truth and those who work hard to hide and cover it up. By describing the struggle between these two powerful forces, the documentary provides undisputable evidence against the Russian version of events, which states that the plane rolled over and crashed upside down as a result of losing a part of the left wing in the collision with a terrain obstacle, i.e. a birch tree. The Russian version was ultimately adopted by the Tusk government in Poland.

Gargas’ documentary accuses Russia of destruction of key evidence by providing a unique video evidence from the process of destroying the wreckage of the plane the next day after the crash and extensive video evidence of the crash site destruction conducted by employing various techniques. Gargas also presents unknown testimonies of important witnesses that directly contradict the official Russian and Polish scenarios. She also presents some powerful scientific evidence produced by independent experts from all over the world that conclusively invalidate the official version and clearly points to evidence of explosions that took place at a low altitude in midair, as the direct cause of the crash. The documentary also presents some of the most obvious examples of manipulation and falsification of evidence in the investigation process and in the official reports.
Most importantly, Gargas diligently documents the shocking actions and inactions of the Polish officials from the Tusk government and the Prosecutor’s office who were officially responsible for the investigation of the Smolensk crash. The tragi-comic statements of the top Polish officials demonstrate the total lack of political will to find out what happened in Smolensk. The conspiracy of silence and cover-up is superbly documented. The material presented by Gargas, including undisputable facts, video evidence, witness testimonies, and scientific reports prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the official version presented by Russian MAK and Polish Miller’s reports and dutifully promoted by the National Geographic production entitled “Death of the President” that portrays the Smolensk crash as “a controlled flight into terrain” has nothing to do with what really happened to the Polish Air Force One in Smolensk, Russia, on the morning of April 10, 2010.
As a result of her politically sensitive work on this documentary, Gargas had to split her time equally between working on the Smolensk documentary and appearing in court for proceedings aimed at blocking her work on this subject. “Anatomy of a Fall” premiered in Poland in January 2013 as Part I of a bigger project. Part II was released in Poland on April 10, 2014, for the 4th anniversary of the Smolensk crash. The English version of Part II has not been released yet.
Retired Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Senior Scientific Intelligence officer Eugene Poteat, goes on the record:
"The trip to Smolensk was expected to highlight Russia finally admitting culpability in the massacre, after long having blamed it on the Germans, an atrocity they had tried to conceal for over 70 years.
As for the reception committee, it had different ideas. Putin wasn’t looking forward to such an occasion. Into this poisonous reception brew was President Kaczynski’s well-known public criticism of Moscow and Putin, a habit that has ended the lives of others within Russia – and abroad. A few discouraging Russian requirements – that Kaczynski could not attend in any official capacity – did not halt the Poles. Kaczynski would go anyway on non-official, “personal” business. To Russians, such a distinction would be meaningless, not lessening the possible international excoriation of such an event. A problem ripe for a modern, Russian solution: a tragic, ‘natural’ accident."
